Miles College is a historically black college located in Fairfield, which is a city in Jefferson County, in the US state of Alabama, with a population estimated at a number of more than 11 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census, the city being part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Area, which is the 48th largest metropolitan area in the United States, housing more than 1 million people, within its limits (2008).
Miles College was founded in 1898, the efforts for its founding starting since 1893, being chartered as Miles Memorial College, in honor of Bishop William H. Miles, adopting its current name in 1941. The College is a private liberal arts institution of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME Church), and it is also a member of the United Negro College Fund. It offers students 25 bachelor degrees in various fields of study, including in business and accounting, humanities, education and natural sciences and mathematics.
Miles’ athletic teams are known as the Golden Bears, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, including in: football, basketball, softball, cross country, baseball, track and volleyball. The school’s colors are purple and gold.
